Astura at AIJA Cairo 2026 | Merger Control in Emerging Markets
On 16 October 2026, Margot Blondel, Counsel, participated in the AIJA conference “Where Innovation Meets Tradition”, held in Cairo, Egypt.
Bringing together the M&A and IP Commissions, the event explored key legal developments under the themes “Mergers and Acquisitions in the Digital Age” and “Intellectual Property in the Media Ecosystem”.
As part of the M&A programme, Margot Blondel joined Marie-Luise Heuer (BLOMSTEIN), Francesca Bichiri (act legal Italy), Omar Sherif (Shalakany) and Aziz Abaza (Amereller) for a panel discussion on “Merger Control in Emerging Markets”.
Using an hypothetical cross-border M&A transaction followed from signing to closing, the panel focused on issues that matter most in practice for an M&A deal team: identifying filing and below-threshold risks, building a realistic regulatory timetable, managing information flows and gun-jumping during the interim period, and coordinating remedies across several jurisdictions.
One recurring theme throughout the discussion was that merger control is increasingly about much more than turnover thresholds.
The panel also provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the growing complexity of merger control requirements in cross-border transactions, particularly in emerging markets and on how these regulatory constraints increasingly interact with deal execution and risk allocation.
We thank AIJA and all fellow panelists for these insightful discussions.
